Our Story

The Gallery on Main, began as most things do as an idea born of need. In the fall of 2000, Gil Smith, Chair of the EKU Art department and Pat Banks, artist, began a discussion about the need for a venue that could showcase academic artists, professional artists and new emerging artists in a permanent public space. It needed to be a professional presentation, accessible and affordable to elevate the fine arts and crafts in the collection.. Okay so we needed a fairy godmother! Well on cue entered Ms. Barb Grice, President and CEO of Community Trust Bank building. She had the space we needed, a Main Street entrance and wall space in the Community Trust Bank. It was right on Main Street! So we organized a board of gifted and talented artists, businesspersons and interested community members. We applied for our 501(c)(3) and started building our artist base, show ideas and mission. Our first show was scheduled for September 11, 2001. this was a traumatic time and tragedy so it was rescheduled for the next week. It was a huge success. We think people gathered to be together and be renewed in spirit.

Our mission is to support and cultivate artists and the arts as a vital resource to education and the community.

We have had a diverse collection of show themes from Love, Environment, Women, Water, Social Justice, etc. We have had group shows, one person shows, student work, and international exchanges! We have had media that includes clay, wood, iron, metal, stone, glass, fabric, canvas, paper, oil, acrylic, pencil, pastel, watercolor, photography, etc. Our board has evolved, changed and is in constant motion, Tim Houk is our current host at the Community Trust Bank. We are always growing and reaching out to new artists, recognizing new work and celebrating our diverse community!
